Invisible Things

Oil Paintings

2011 - 2013

These paintings started in my final years of undergrad and then continued into my time at the Vermont Studio Center residency program the following year. Looking back at these paintings now, I see the buds of so many threads that I continued to follow throughout my creative journey. The melancholic children that I return to time and time again as subject matter. The preoccupation with transformation broadly and death more specifically. The tension between realism and abstraction.

The title 'Invisible Things' came from a Bill Viola talk. How can you express what can't be seen in a visual medium? How does what you see make you feel?
